What are cosmetic dentures?

Complete or partial dentures?

Complete dentures

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. It rests on the gums and is shaped to support your lips and cheeks.

Partial dentures

A partial denture fills the gaps left by one or more missing teeth and is held in place by your remaining teeth. It also helps stop those teeth drifting into the space.

How your dentures are made

1. We check your gums and any remaining teeth and discuss the options.
2. Moulds of your mouth are taken so the denture can be made to fit.
3. Bite and shade. We record how your jaws meet and choose the shape and colour of the teeth with you.
4. Try-in. You try a trial version so you can see the look and feel before it is finished.
5. Your finished denture is fitted and adjusted for comfort.
6. We see you again to make any small adjustments once you have worn it.

Getting used to new dentures

New dentures can feel bulky for the first few weeks, and eating and speaking take a little practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. If a sore spot develops, come back to us for an adjustment and do not try to alter the denture yourself.

Looking after your dentures

• Clean them every day with a brush and denture cleaner, not ordinary toothpaste
• Take them out at night unless your dentist advises otherwise
• Keep them in water or denture solution when you are not wearing them
• Keep up your check-ups, because gums change shape over time and dentures may need adjusting or replacing
