Plaque

Dental plaque is a sticky bacteria film that’s constantly forming on your teeth. Dental plaque is normal and unavoidable. But if it’s not removed through routine dental cleanings and daily brushing and flossing, it can cause cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues.

What is tooth plaque made of?

Plaque is made of bacteria, leftover food particles and saliva. When you eat, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the food debris (such as sugars and carbohydrates). This breaks the food down into a sticky, acidic film — dental plaque as we know it. Technically plaque isn’t coloured. However, it can cause your teeth to discolour due to the fact that food particles get stuck on the plaque.

Symptoms of dental plaque

  • Red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush.
  • A fuzzy feeling on your teeth.
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis).

At our Cheadle dental clinic, we help patients from Manchester, Stockport, and surrounding areas prevent plaque through professional cleanings and oral hygiene guidance. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are essential to keep plaque under control.
