How do teeth whitening do wonders?

It is a very simple process. We use a chemical known as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to remove the yellowish colour and brighten the surface of your teeth. There are a number of systems available to help this. Our experts will check your teeth in detail and advise you on the most suitable option for you.

We will advise which is the most suitable one for you. At Cheadle, we have a very popular method, Home Whitening. In this method we prepare customised trays which are filled with correct types of gels. These gels are applied to your teeth for about 30-45 minutes which produce excellent results.

Our experts in teeth whitening make you feel quite comfortable in the whole process and give you the complete details. The cosmetic dentist will carry out the first cycle of teeth whitening in the surgery. This is to ensure that appropriate instructions are carefully followed to get the perfect smile for you.

Wall chairside systems, another method, will take about one hour in the surgery which will be very often followed up with a home whitening system.

Other methods are also available for teeth whitening

Later whitening: In this method one or more lasers are used to whiten the teeth.

Zoom Whitening: The popular whitening product featured on the TV programme, Extreme Makeover, is used in this process of teeth whitening.

Enlighten:  This is a modern and effective method which gives you excellent results.

The best method suitable for you will be determined on the basis of detailed examination of your teeth. And once decided, it will assure you the best possible results

How does the treatment work?

As your teeth have suffered years of damage and discolouration, our whitening treatments instantly reverse the damage and regain the lost sheen and whiteness. We select the procedure most suitable for you after detailed examination which will align exactly with your teeth. We will give you a special tray exclusively prepared for you after taking impressions of your teeth so that it fits perfectly with you.

After an initial session in the surgery, we will give you everything you want to continue the treatment at home. You will get bleaching gel and complete instructions along with instant access to our expert advice any time. After the first session itself, you will be surprised to see the unbelievable spark of whitening in your beautiful teeth!

Tips to follow after the initial session?

After the first session, as in the case of any dental procedure, the patients have to be a little careful for the next 24 hours. They are supposed to take only soft, easy-to-digest foods immediately after the procedure. No hot drinks please, as it could cause sensitivity.  You should continue the whitening treatment at the comfort of your home. If you have any queries or feel any discomfort, feel free to contact our experts immediately.

A few things to remember about teeth whitening

Please remember that tooth whitening is a minimally invasive procedure which uses a whitening agent that helps whiten your teeth. The whitening agent breaks down the discoloured molecules in your teeth, enabling you to smile with confidence. You will be quite surprised with the excellent results when you leave our Dental Clinic. To make the smile lasting, you may follow certain food and drinks restrictions.

Immediately after the teeth whitening session, we recommend a few tips for you to retain the results. These are mainly connected with your eating habits, what to eat, what not to eat.

Remember that during the whitening process and the following three days, your teeth will be easily susceptible to staining. So, you should avoid colourful foods and drinks during these days. Of course, for the subsequent days also, you have to be careful about food habits.  That raises the question:

What can I eat and can’t eat after teeth whitening?

Foods and drinks to be avoided

You should avoid food and drinks with strongly pigmented colours. Because, they are likely to stain your freshly whitened teeth.

Many of the coloured food items will certainly stain the natural tooth enamel when consumed. As you have undergone the tooth whitening process, the additional vulnerability will affect the teeth with more vigour, so you should avoid such food items.

Think about a white shirt or any other absorbent material. If the coloured food that you eat falls on the shirt, what will happen? Will it stain the shirt? Same is the case with teeth after the whitening process. You should avoid coloured foods and drinks.

  • Alcohol – Red Wine & Beer

You may have a strong urge for a pint of beer or wine on a Friday night after heavy work. Remember, after teeth whitening, it is always advisable to switch to some other drinks. Red wine contains certain natural dyes and acids that can alter the colour of your teeth.

What about beer? Beers with dark colours will, of course, stain your teeth. So, try something lighter. If the urge to drink some alcohol is irresistible, you should flush the residue in the mouth with water after each sip.

  • Tea and Coffee

A cup of coffee in the morning is a habit; we find it difficult to avoid. But coffee can stain the teeth. The dark pigments in coffee beans and granules come into contact with our teeth, which can certainly lead to staining.

  • Smoothies and Juices (Orange, Apple, Tomato, Carrot)

Smoothies are a healthy source of vitamins. But, the ingredients of smoothies are bright, colourful vegetables which have natural pigments. While smoothies improve your health, they may stain the newly whitened teeth.

Still can’t avoid some of the drinks mentioned above? There is one less harmful way to do it. Use a straw. It will reduce direct contact between drinks and your teeth. The negative effects could also be reduced!

  • Tomato Sauces

Tomatoes are used in plenty of recipes – in both foods and drinks. Remember, they do stain your teeth. As tomatoes are very acidic, any food items containing tomatoes have a staining effect. It is better to reduce the consumption of food items and smoothies containing tomatoes for a few weeks after the whitening session. It will help save your whitened teeth.

  • Berries (Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Plums)

It is a fact that berries are healthy antioxidants that flush out toxins from the body. But, if you plan to have a berry-based breakfast after a tooth whitening session, it is better to evaluate the advantages as well as disadvantages of such a food.

  • Vibrant Vegetables (Tomatoes, Carrots, Beets, Spinach)

Usually, spinach and beets are added to a salad to make it tastier. But they are also used as natural dyes. One slice of beetroot can turn the whole salad pink! Then what will happen if you eat beetroot immediately after teeth whitening. The whitened teeth will fade immediately.

  • Colourful Spices (Turmeric, Curry Powder, 5 Spices, Paprika)

We all love spices as they make our life exciting. But spices are not so harmless as they may stain our teeth and leave their residues there. Turmeric is the number one enemy in this category. The best option is to avoid spicy foods after teeth whitening. They may appear harmless, but their pigments will make their marks on the teeth.

  • Red Meats

Red meats certainly contain traces of blood, though it may sound unpleasant. When you eat red meat after tooth whitening, it can stain your teeth, without you even realising it. Carefully avoid beef after you have whitened your teeth.

It is not an exclusive list: Please keep in mind that what is mentioned here is not an exclusive list of food items which are to be avoided after teeth whitening. The vital point is that you must be careful about what you eat and how you eat immediately after having a teeth whitening. The emphasis is on precaution, not complete banning of anything.

Avoid acidic and sugary foods

In addition to pigmented food and drink, it is also vital to avoid acidic, greasy, and sugary foods. The whitening process weakens the pores of your teeth which would only be further weakened by sugary and acidic foods. This can potentially cause decay-causing bacteria which can result in irritation and staining.

Some examples of foods to avoid after whitening include:

Sugary

  • Cookies
  • Ice cream
  • Toffee and Sweets
  • Chocolate (especially Milk and Dark, as they have more cocoa – which effectively gives chocolate its colour)

Acidic

  • Lemon and Lime
  • Fizzy Soft Drinks
  • Kinds of vinegar
  • Soy Sauce

Proper maintenance of oral hygiene also helps in preventing damage from the above foods after teeth whitening. You should use an electric toothbrush; brushing after every meal also helps brush away the surface stains before they can settle in. Brushing after every meal prevents the possibility of settling of food residues and acids on your teeth leading to damage of enamel.

In short, it is always the best option to avoid these foods and stick on to white or lighter foods that contain less sugar.  These food restrictions are recommended for the first few days after the teeth whitening session. After two or three days of the procedure, the pores of the teeth will begin to close. Hence, after those initial days you can start eating and drinking as usual.

Still, if you continue with the suggested eating habit further, it will certainly benefit you in the long run for maintaining dental health.

Foods you can enjoy

In general, it is always desirable to focus on eating foods that are light in colour after having your teeth whitened.

We give below a few suggested foods and drinks for you.:

  • Water
  • White Wine (although the acidity of the alcohol could still irritate the enamel)
  • Whitefish
  • White rice or Pasta
  • Yogurt
  • White meat (e.g Chicken or Turkey)
  • Tofu
  • Porridge or Oatmeal,
  • Egg Whites
  • Nuts
  • Non-staining fruits (Apples, Bananas, Pears, Etc)
  • White Bread
  • Milk
